INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS

A paid or unpaid opportunity for students to work on-site for a specified period of time to learn about a particular industry or occupation.

Internship has been commonly used in the medical model of linking theory with work experience. It has roots in the ancient tradition of apprenticeship and provides an opportunity for the student intern to gain work experience in a career pathway.

The experience will involve a variety of tasks to provide the intern with a vision of the many skills necessary for the student's career path including the many facets of the business setting and related career fields. The experience will expose interns to employment opportunities.

CAROLYN CAPPS
Fresno State Internship

As a graduate of McLane High School in Fresno, Carolyn Capps knew that she would someday earn her Bachelor's Degree. After receiving her AA from Fresno City College she found herself studying Construction Management at California State University, Fresno. This course of study seemed appropriate for someone who is part owner of a contracting business and who has a background in drafting. A friend advised her to take full advantage of the internship opportunities available at Fresno State by completing two if she could.

Her first opportunity came in the form of a summer internship with Clark Construction. Work at Clark gave her the chance to learn real-world construction management techniques particularly in the areas of processing project documentation, utilizing plans and specifications, job site progress photos and web-based integrated software.

The City of Fresno provided her second internship opportunity, this time working with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance. Carolyn and her partner were able to plan and implement their own ADA project with suggestions from the City.

Today, Carolyn is in the process of finishing her Construction Management degree. She emphasizes the importance of job experience coupled with classroom learning as the formula for job readiness in the construction industry.
